The power of vulnerability. TED talk by Brené Brown

This weekend a friend mentioned this TED Talk by Brené Brown.
It has deeply stirred me and  I want to share it with you. It touches upon the following questions:

How do we learn to embrace our vulnerabilities and imperfections so that we can engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness?

How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to recognize that we are enough – that we are worthy of love, belonging, and joy?

Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work., has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame.
In this video she presents her latest research and shares the main elements that  people that have a sense of worthiness have in common:
  • Sense of courage to  tell the story of who they are with their whole heart,  have the courage to be imperfect
  • Compassion. To be kind to themselves first and then to others, we cannot practice compassion with other people if we do not treat ourselves kindly
  • Connexion.  As a result of authenticity, they were willing to let go of who they thought they should be in order to be who they really are
  • They fully embraced vulnerability. They believed that what  made them vulnerable, made them beautiful: they  had the willingness to say I love you first, the willingness to do something where there were  no guarantees, the willing to invest in  a relationship that may  or may not workout.

Her tips to be authentic are the following:

  • To let ourselves be seen, deeply seen, vulnerably seen
  • To love with our whole heart, even if there is no guarantee
  • To practice gratitude and joy in those moment of doubt, fear and vulnerability
  • To believe that we are enough

I hope you enjoy it!
